The Best Bibles For Women

Short answer: There is no single best Bible for every woman, but a good starting list is the NLT Courage For Life Study Bible for Women, the CSB She Reads Truth Bible, the NIV Woman's Study Bible, The Bible in 52 Weeks and the NLT THRIVE Devotional Bible for Women. The right one depends on whether you want deep study notes, daily devotions or a structured reading plan. The translation underneath matters more than the cover.

As a pastor for twenty years, I know how important it is to have a Bible that speaks to the season of life you are in. Women's editions add notes, profiles and devotionals that connect Scripture to the questions many women bring to the page. People in the pews kept asking me the same thing in different words: where do I start, and which Bible should I buy? This article answers that.

I have kept the list short on purpose. Every Bible below carries the full text of Scripture, so you are not getting a different Bible, only different help around it. Each one suits a different stage of the journey.

What Is The Best Bible For Women?

The honest answer is that the best Bible is the one you will open tomorrow morning. A beautiful edition that sits on a shelf does less good than a plain one that is worn at the edges. Still, some editions are built with women in mind, and the five below are the ones I would point a friend toward. If you want to understand what separates a study edition from a regular Bible first, read what a study Bible is.

How Do I Choose The Right Bible For Me?

Start with the translation, then the features, then the look. A translation you cannot follow will defeat you by the third chapter of Leviticus. The NLT reads easily, the CSB sits in the middle between readable and literal, and the NIV is widely used in churches and study groups. If you want the full picture, I walk through the options in Which Bible Should You Read? and How Many Bible Versions Are There?

Then ask what you actually want help with. Study notes and maps suit someone who likes to dig. Devotionals suit someone who wants a short, steady daily rhythm. A reading plan suits someone who has started the Bible three times and stalled in the same place. Last, think about size and print. A Bible you will carry to church needs to be light enough to carry.

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly handles the word of truth.

2 Timothy 2:15 (NIV)

Which Study Bibles For Women Are Worth A Look?

NLT Courage For Life Study Bible For Women

The Courage For Life Study Bible for Women stands out as a rich study Bible. Its purpose is to guide women toward living purposeful lives of courage, breaking old patterns and experiencing transformation.

It includes reflection questions, encouraging profiles, a topical index and access to a suite of resources through the Filament Bible app. I like that it links to an audio Bible, study notes, videos, maps, devotionals and a library of worship music. I recommend it for women who are serious about growth.

CSB She Reads Truth Bible

One of the bestsellers I found while looking at Bibles for women online is the CSB She Reads Truth Bible. It grew out of the She Reads Truth community, and its aim is to help women read and understand Scripture for themselves. The translation is the Christian Standard Bible, which I review separately.

It includes 189 devotionals written with a gospel-centered focus, along with reading plans for every book of the Bible. It is also a handsome book, with 66 illustrated key verses, 35 full-color timelines, 20 full-color maps and 11 full-color charts. Those are the counts listed for it, so check the current listing before you buy.

NIV, The Woman's Study Bible

Another bestseller is The Woman's Study Bible. It has a full-color redesign, and its publisher says it has sold over 2 million copies since it first appeared. It centers on the journey of godly womanhood, and it roots that growth in a woman's identity as a follower of Christ and a child of the Kingdom.

I appreciate the essays by women recognized as experts in theology, biblical studies, archaeology and philosophy. They help you build real theological knowledge. The NIV Woman's Study Bible also includes full-color in-text maps, charts, timelines and family trees that give a visual picture of Israel and other biblical themes. My longer thoughts on the NIV family of study editions are in the NIV Study Bible review.

What Are The Best Devotional And Reading Bibles For Women?

Not every woman wants a study Bible, and that is fine. If your struggle is consistency rather than depth, a devotional or reading-plan edition may serve you better. If that is you, my guide on how to read the Bible and the page on where to start reading the Bible will help alongside these.

The Bible In 52 Weeks

For a structured approach, I recommend The Bible in 52 Weeks. It offers a themed reading plan with a weekly opportunity for reflection and discussion. Each week the verses are selected to tie together themes such as persevering through challenges and moving on from mistakes. It also gives interactive questions, Bible journaling prompts and prayers.

NLT THRIVE Devotional Bible For Women

Sheri Rose Shepherd's THRIVE Devotional Bible for Women is a daily guide for women who want to know God more deeply. Each day's reading combines a key Scripture, a love letter from God, a perspective from Sheri Rose, a treasure of truth callout and a prayer for the reader. Beyond the daily readings, you also get background on biblical texts, inspiring profiles and nuggets of wisdom through the Scriptures.

Which Bibles Should I Stay Away From?

I would not tell any woman to avoid a Bible because it is pink, floral or marketed to a particular audience. The cover is not the danger. What I would watch is the text and the teaching around it. Choose a recognized translation from an established publisher, and read the notes with a critical eye, because notes are human commentary and not Scripture. The same Acts 17:11 habit applies to every study note, including mine.

examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true

Acts 17:11 (NIV)

Be cautious with any edition that presents itself as a new revelation, or that rewrites passages to fit a message. If you are unsure about a translation, ask your pastor. I explain how translations differ and why that matters in How Many Times Has The Bible Been Rewritten?

What Book Of The Bible Should Every Woman Read?

There is no book that is only for women, because the whole Bible is for the whole church. If you want a place to start, I would begin with the Gospel of John to meet Jesus, then read Psalms for prayer, Proverbs for wisdom, and Romans for the shape of the gospel. Ruth and Esther are two short books named for women, and they are worth reading slowly. If you want to think about how Scripture treats women's roles in the church, see What Does The Bible Say About Women Pastors?

There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.
