What Does The Bible Say About Watching Bad Things?

Streaming services, social media and a phone in every pocket mean that nobody has to go looking for bad content anymore. It finds you. People in the pews kept asking the same kind of question: is it a sin to watch this movie, to laugh at that show, to scroll past what I should not? The Bible never mentions television, but it speaks directly to what we allow in through our eyes and ears.

I will lay out the main passages, explain why they matter, give a way to test what you watch, and answer some of the Scripture questions people connect with this topic.

What Does The Bible Say About Watching Bad Things?

Start with the standard Paul gives the Philippians for the mind of a believer.

whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable

Philippians 4:8 (NIV)

The verse goes on to say we should think about such things. It is a positive command, not just a ban. The question is not only "is this allowed?" but "is this feeding the kind of mind God wants me to have?" Whatever we watch, we are also thinking about it, and what we think about shapes us.

David set a personal rule in a psalm about leading with integrity:

I will not look with approval on anything that is vile.

Notice the word "approval." David was a king, and he could not avoid seeing evil in the world. His vow was about what he would endorse, enjoy and set before his eyes. That is a helpful distinction for us. Seeing a hard scene in a historical drama or a news report is not the same as taking pleasure in cruelty or immorality.

Proverbs gives the reason it matters:

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.

The eyes are the gate to the heart. Jesus said the same thing in His teaching on lust: looking can become sin when it turns into desire (Matthew 5:28), and Job made a covenant with his eyes not to look lustfully at a young woman (Job 31:1). Why Should Christians Avoid Watching Evil Things?

There are three reasons, and I will take them in turn.

First, it shapes us. Paul tells the Romans not to copy the pattern of the world but to be transformed by the renewing of their minds (Romans 12:2). A steady diet of violence, cynicism or sexual content makes those things feel ordinary, and ordinary things stop bothering us. That change is slow, so we rarely notice.

Second, it makes us accomplices. Paul tells the Ephesians not to take part in the deeds of darkness but to expose them.

Have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.

If a show treats adultery, cruelty or greed as entertaining or admirable, and we laugh along and pay for it, we are taking part in something God calls sin. Paul says the same about those who approve of such things in the first chapter of Romans.

Third, it affects others. Paul reminds the Corinthians that some things may be lawful but not helpful (1 Corinthians 10:23).

A believer who is watching a movie with children, or posting about it, is setting an example. I would ask myself whether it builds up, and not only whether it is permitted. God sees what we watch, which is a reason to take it seriously and also a reason for confidence, because He is merciful toward those who turn back (1 John 1:9).

Is It A Sin To Watch Movies And Shows With Bad Content?

The honest answer is that it depends on the content and on you. The Bible does not forbid movies, and many stories deal with real evil, as Scripture itself does. The book of Judges, the story of David and Bathsheba and the crucifixion are not clean stories. Depicting evil is not the same as celebrating it.

Here is a set of questions I would use:

• Does this make sin look attractive, funny or harmless?
• Does it stir up temptation in me that I know is hard to resist?
• Would I be comfortable watching it with Christ in the room, or with my pastor or my family?
• Am I watching it for the story and the craft, or for the thing the Bible calls sin?
• Does it leave me hardened, anxious or ashamed?

Conscience matters. Paul says that what is not done from faith is sin (Romans 14:23), so if you doubt that a thing is right, do not do it. Different believers will land in different places on horror, violence and language, which I touched on in is it a sin to watch horror movies. Where the Bible speaks clearly, as with pornography and lust, there is no gray area.

What Are Bad Habits According To The Bible?

The Bible does not use the phrase "bad habits," but it describes patterns that wear away a life: sloth, gossip, drunkenness, bitterness, lust, and idle talk. Proverbs describes a person who has a habit of repaying evil for good:

Evil will never leave the house of one who pays back evil for good.

Habits form through repetition, and watching is a repeated habit like any other. If something you watch keeps pulling you toward sin, the answer in Scripture is to cut it off, not to manage it (see Matthew 5:29-30). Jesus uses a hard image there, and I do not read it as an instruction to harm yourself, but as a call to take sin more seriously than we usually do. What Should We Fill Our Minds With Instead?

The Bible always pairs "stop" with "start." Jesus said the Spirit would guide His followers into truth (John 16:13), and He prayed that eternal life means knowing the Father and the Son (John 17:3). Our entertainment choices matter because our lives are meant to be about knowing God, not filling time.

That does not mean you can only watch sermons. Good stories, comedy, art, sport and nature documentaries are gifts. David wrote that he had examined his own heart before God (Psalm 17:3). A healthy rhythm includes Scripture, prayer, fellowship and a deliberate choice about what comes through the screen. Ask the Lord to give you an appetite for what is good, and then stock your life with it.
