Short answer: The Bible does not forbid oral sex between a husband and wife. Scripture honors the marriage bed, and as long as both spouses freely agree, it is motivated by love and not lust, and it stays inside the marriage, there is no biblical command against it. Outside marriage it is sin, because the Bible reserves all sexual intimacy for marriage. Oral sex is sex, whatever the magazines say.

This is not an easy topic for a pastor to write about, and it is not an easy one for Christians to ask. Many people feel too embarrassed to ask anyone, so they type it into a search bar late at night. I want to answer plainly and respectfully, the way I would want a question about my own marriage answered.
People in the pews kept asking the same questions: what is allowed, what is not, and how do I know? The honest answer begins with what the Bible actually says, and it is more modest than many Christians assume. Where Scripture is silent, I will say so.
Does The Bible Mention Oral Sex?
No, not by name. The Bible never describes or prohibits oral sex in direct terms. Some commentators read a few poetic lines in the Song of Songs as a veiled reference, and I will mention Song of Solomon 2:3 because it is often cited. But the Song is rich poetry, full of imagery, and I would be careful about building a doctrine on one reading of a metaphor. No one can say with certainty what those lines mean.
That matters for how we reason. When Scripture does not give a command, we should not invent one and bind other people's consciences with it. We also should not treat silence as a license for anything at all. We work from the principles the Bible does state, and those principles are clear enough to guide a married couple and a single person alike.
What Kind Of Sex Does The Bible Allow In Marriage?
The Bible celebrates sex within marriage. It begins with the design: a man leaves his father and mother, is united to his wife, and the two become one flesh.
That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.
Genesis 2:24 (NIV)
God made sex. He made it for delight and bonding, as well as for children. The writer of Hebrews calls the marriage bed pure:
Marriage should be honored by all, and the marriage bed kept pure, for God will judge the adulterer and all the sexually immoral.
Hebrews 13:4 (NIV)
Both halves of that verse matter. The bed is pure, and it must be kept pure, which means faithful. Within that boundary, the Bible places no catalog of permitted and forbidden acts on a husband and wife. It does give three principles that I think govern the whole of the marriage bed.
Mutual Consent
Paul writes that spouses should not deprive each other except by mutual agreement (1 Corinthians 7:3-5). The whole passage is built on mutuality: neither spouse has authority over only his or her own body. This works in both directions. A husband or wife should not be refused out of selfishness, and a spouse should never be pressured into an act they are uncomfortable with. Pushing is not honoring.
Love Rather Than Lust
Lust sees a person as something to use. Love sees a person to cherish. Jesus said that looking at someone lustfully is adultery in the heart, and that standard does not disappear on a wedding day. It means your attention, your thoughts and your fantasies belong to your spouse. If an act is meant to act out something you saw in pornography or imagined about someone else, something is wrong, even in marriage. For that I would point you to Is Lust A Sin In The Bible? and Is Watching Porn A Sin In The Bible?
Faithfulness And Honor
The marriage bed is for the two who made the covenant. And within it, Paul's instruction to look not only to your own interests but to the interests of others applies as much as anywhere (Philippians 2:3-4). Marriage is not about demanding what you want. It is about serving the one you married. Our article on sex in the Bible gives the larger picture.
What About Oral Sex Before Marriage?
Here the Bible is not silent about the principle. Sexual intimacy is reserved for marriage, and the New Testament word porneia, usually translated sexual immorality, covers sexual activity outside of it. I have written about this term in Defining Porneia In The Bible if you want to understand the word itself.
A lot of young people are told that oral sex is not really sex, or that it is a safer substitute for intercourse. That is not a biblical way of thinking. The question in Scripture is not whether a particular act counts technically, but whether the intimacy belongs to the marriage covenant. Paul sets the bar high:
But among you there must not be even a hint of sexual immorality, or of any kind of impurity, or of greed, because these are improper for God's holy people.
Ephesians 5:3 (NIV)
Notice the phrase "not even a hint." That does not mean those who have failed are beyond forgiveness. If you have crossed that line, God forgives, and I would encourage you to read Does God Forgive All Sins? and How To Repent. It does mean we should not try to see how close we can get. For those who are dating, Is Premarital Sex A Sin In The Bible? and Is Kissing Or Making Out A Sin? will help you think about boundaries. Some Christians hold that only intercourse is reserved for marriage. I do not read Scripture that way. I think the whole of sexual intimacy is a gift to be received inside the marriage covenant.
There is also the matter of what we mean by the word sex. The Bible does not draw a technical line the way a modern health pamphlet does. It speaks of the whole person being joined to another: body, affection, loyalty and promise. When Paul writes that anyone joined to a prostitute becomes one with her in body (1 Corinthians 6:15-20), he is talking about far more than a single act. Intimacy is intimacy, and the covenant is what protects it. That is why I say oral sex is sex in the sense that matters: it belongs to the same category of union and carries the same weight.
How Should Couples Decide?
When the Bible gives no command, Christians are called to wisdom, conscience and love. I would encourage a married couple to ask these questions together, and to pray about them honestly.
- Is this voluntary, and have we both freely agreed to it?
- Why do we want it? Is it to love and enjoy each other, or to chase an image from pornography or a fantasy about someone else?
- Has either of us a settled conviction before the Lord that this is wrong for us? Paul says that going against conscience is itself a problem (Romans 14:23).
- Is it uplifting and good for both of us, or does one of us feel used afterward?
If one spouse would like something the other does not, talk about it calmly. Ask why. Listen without defending yourself. Pray together. Past hurt, a history of abuse, a medical issue or a simple discomfort can all be behind a no, and it deserves tenderness. If the conversation keeps going badly, a pastor or a Christian counselor can help.
Is oral sex required? No. The Bible does not require it of any couple, and it does not forbid it for a married one. That leaves room for freedom in the marriage bed, and room to say no to what does not serve your spouse.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is oral sex forbidden in the Bible?
Not within marriage. The Bible never names or prohibits it between a husband and wife, and it affirms the marriage bed as pure. Outside marriage, all sexual intimacy is forbidden, including oral sex.
What kind of sex is allowed in the Bible?
Sex between a husband and wife in a faithful marriage, marked by mutual consent, love, and honor. Scripture forbids adultery, sex before marriage, and the other practices it lists as sexual immorality. See What Sexual Activities Does The Bible Forbid?
Is oral sex before marriage still a sin?
Yes. The Bible's word for sexual immorality covers more than intercourse, and the standard Jesus and Paul set is high. Calling it something other than sex does not change what it is. Is Premarital Sex A Sin? goes into the reasoning.
What if my spouse is not comfortable with it?
Then do not press. Marriage is meant to be marked by honor and consent, and love does not pressure. Talk about it kindly, listen to the reasons, and be willing to pray together and wait.
Does pornography make any sexual act sinful?
A sexual act shaped by pornography, or done to act out a fantasy about someone other than your spouse, is a problem even within marriage. Keep your mind and heart on your spouse. See Is Watching Porn A Sin?
